Lewes District Local Plan
Phase 2 Consultation

February 28, 2026

The draft Local Plan (Phase 2) is out for public consultation until February 28. It will shape the Lewes District up to 2042.

What's in the Plan?

It's based on transport. This 'helps' us in Newick, because large-scale development here becomes unsustainable since we live in a largely car-dependent village. New building will go where people can already walk, cycle, or use buses and trains and rely less on cars.

It also suggests a new policy called a Strategic Green Gap, to stop towns and villages from joining together. This is why the Green Gap between Newick and North Chailey is protected in the plan.

Key Questions to Answer

The consultation form asks 12 questions, but the key ones you should answer for Newick are questions 1, 2, 3, 8, 10 + 12. Here's a simple interpretation of these questions to help you:

Q1

Will the plan help to create well-connected low carbon communities, able to deal with climate change?

Q2

Do you think the policy about sustainable development ensures people living in new developments will be able to easily get to main travel hubs like stations by cycling, walking or using buses?

Q3

Do you think infrastructure like schools, doctors, hospitals, water and electricity should already be in place before people move into new housing developments?

Q8

Is protecting Strategic Green Gaps like the one between Newick and North Chailey a good idea?

Q10

Do you support keeping the recreational spaces we have – the recreation ground, tennis and bowls clubs for example?

Q12

Do you mostly agree or disagree with what the council has said in the draft Plan?
